Drilling & Well Construction

Modern Well Testing Operations

Introduction

Well testers are usually one of the last crews that work on a well before it begins sending oil or gas to the refinery. Well testers do various tests on the wells to get information such as a well’s flow rate, pressure, salinity levels, or anything the oil company wants to know about the well.

This ten-day course will provide participants with a comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge of well test operations and techniques and methods as well as all of the latest developments in the field. Emphasis will be placed on the practical aspects of well testing as a number of relevant examples will be presented. Participants will also be exposed to different basic well testing analysis techniques and a number of relevant examples will be presented as well.

Objectives

By the end of this course participants will be able to

  • Specify clear objectives for a well test and know the reasons for conducting a well test
  • Identify the appropriate type of test
  • Know how to clarify objectives for the well test (what information is required from the test)
  • Know how to select the appropriate type of test and how to select the duration of testing periods
  • Be more familiar with all types of well testing
  • Know how to conduct a well test
  • Know more about separators and separation operations
  • Design the well test duration and flow rates
  • Make the proper selection of surface separation equipment, gauge types, and sampling
  • Be more able to master operations related to pressure control, flow measurement and flow rate calculations
  • Specify what measurements are required on the test site and the required accuracy
  • Detail how real-time pressure monitoring can be used in decision making for a continuation of testing
  • Make the proper selection of gauge types, surface testing equipment, and sampling equipment
  • Know about the hazards and safety measures that should be made on conducting a well test
